Coventry City have signed Nigeria striker Taiwo Awoniyi from Nottingham Forest in a deal reportedly worth £9 million.
Awoniyi will join Frank Lampard’s side ahead of their opening Premier League match against reigning champions Arsenal on Friday.
The striker is Lampard’s latest signing following the arrivals of Gus Hamer, Carl Rushworth, Loum Tchaouna, Aurele Amenda and Caleb Yirenkyi.
Awoniyi will also link up with fellow Nigeria international Frank Onyeka at the CBS Arena.
Coventry have returned to the Premier League for the first time in 25 years after winning the Championship last season.
Awoniyi said he was excited about the new season and looked forward to working with his new teammates.
He praised Coventry’s achievements in winning promotion, saying he was eager to join the team and begin the new chapter of his career.
The 29-year-old Nigeria international, who has been capped 10 times, said goodbye to Nottingham Forest after receiving a guard of honour from the squad during their pre-season friendly against Brest on Sunday.
Awoniyi spent four seasons at Forest, scoring 23 goals in 103 appearances across all competitions. He lost his place in the team for much of last season.
In May 2025, Awoniyi was placed in an induced coma after suffering a ruptured intestine when he collided with a goalpost during a match against Leicester.
Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis paid tribute to the striker, saying Awoniyi would always have a special place in the club’s history.
Marinakis described him as one of the defining figures in Forest’s journey and said he had given supporters memorable moments that would not be forgotten.
