Adedokun Waliyu Manchester United’s pre-season campaign ended with a 4-2 defeat to Ruben Amorim’s AC Milan in the Polish city of Wroclaw on Saturday.
Michael Carrick’s side took the lead twice, through Harry Maguire and Patrick Dorgu, but defensive mistakes allowed Milan to turn the match around.
United took the lead in the second minute when captain Bruno Fernandes delivered a corner that Harry Maguire headed powerfully into the net.
Milan equalised after a defensive error allowed Goncalo Ramos to enter the penalty area and square the ball for Samuel Chukwueze, who rolled it home.
United were awarded a penalty shortly before half-time after Koni De Winter pulled back Youri Tielemans. However, Fernandes missed from the spot, with Milan goalkeeper Lorenzo Torriani diving to his right to make the save.
It was Fernandes’ second penalty miss in successive friendlies after he had also failed to convert against Leeds in midweek.
United regained the lead when Dorgu capitalised on a loose backpass from Filippo Terracciano.
Milan equalised again when Chukwueze’s wayward shot was turned in at the far post by Alphadjo Cisse.
Marcus Rashford made his first appearance for United since returning from a loan spell with Barcelona. He came on as a substitute in the 60th minute.
Milan completed the comeback in the 68th minute when Chukwueze’s cross was headed into the net by Ramos.
Three minutes later, former Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek raced through the United defence to score Milan’s fourth goal.
The result gave former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim a victory over his old club.
Amorim was dismissed as United manager in January after 14 months in charge. Carrick, a former United and England midfielder, initially took over as caretaker before being appointed permanently and subsequently guiding the club to a third-place finish.
