German club Bayern Munich says it will do everything possible to help Canadian star Alphonso Davies recover in time for the World Cup.
Bayern sporting director Max Eberl said the club is working closely with Canada Soccer while also considering the player’s long-term fitness.
“Our hope is that we can all work together to do what’s best for Phonzy,” Eberl said ahead of Bayern’s final Bundesliga match of the season against Cologne.
Canada will play all three of their group-stage matches at home, beginning with a game against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto on June 12.
Eberl described the situation as unfortunate, especially because the World Cup is being hosted on Canadian soil.
“It’s tragic enough that he’s picked up an injury ahead of the World Cup on home soil,” he said. “We’ll all work together to ensure he might have a chance — but for that to happen, he needs to get fit. He has to accept that, and he does.”
Davies, 25, has struggled with injuries since returning in December after a lengthy absence caused by a knee ligament tear.
His latest injury occurred after coming on as a substitute during Bayern Munich’s Champions League semi-final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on May 6.
According to Eberl, Davies suffered a muscle injury to the back of his left thigh and is expected to be out for several weeks.
The injury will rule him out of Bayern’s final Bundesliga game against Cologne and the German Cup final against Stuttgart on May 23.
Canada is expected to announce its 26-man World Cup squad on May 29.
