Adedokun Waliyu The Canada Media Fund (CMF) has announced 19 projects selected to receive a total of $10.16 million in production funding through the 2026–2027 edition of its Program for Black and Racialized Communities.
Nine of the projects will be produced in Ontario, seven in Quebec, while British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia will each have one project.
The funded projects comprise nine documentaries, five productions for children and youth, and five dramas.
This year marks the first time the Program for Black and Racialized Communities is open to projects in languages other than English and French, resulting in one funded project in Persian. Of the remaining projects, 11 will be in English and seven in French.
Funding decisions were made by a jury of industry peers. The jury responsible for evaluating English-language projects comprised Grace Chin, Kirk Cooper, Ravida Din, Saffron Maeve, Abdul Malik and Erica Meus-Saunders.
French-language funding applications were reviewed by Cécilia Agnès-Keita, Juan Andrés Arango and Anik Magny.
The Program for Black and Racialized Communities supports audiovisual projects from production companies owned and controlled by Black and Racialized persons.
The Canada Media Fund is a not-for-profit organization supported by the Government of Canada and Canada’s cable, satellite and IPTV distributors. It invests in Canadian creators and companies to produce audiovisual and interactive digital media content across various platforms.
The fund aims to strengthen Canadian cultural identity while supporting a more resilient, inclusive and growth-oriented screen-based sector.
