Tottenham have signed Brazilian winger Savinho from Manchester City for a reported initial fee of £75 million ($102 million), taking the club’s total spending in the transfer market beyond £300 million this summer.
The 22-year-old failed to establish himself as a regular first-team player during his two seasons at Manchester City. Tottenham are hoping he can bring additional pace, creativity and attacking threat after narrowly avoiding relegation from the Premier League last season.
“It’s taken a while but I’m very happy to be here,” Savinho said in a Tottenham statement.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity at a brilliant club with one of the best managers in the world. As soon as I spoke to the head coach I knew I had to come. He told me he wants to help me reach the highest level and I believe we can do that together, as a team.”
Roberto De Zerbi’s influence towards the end of last season helped Tottenham avoid relegation to the second tier of English football for the first time in 49 years.
However, the Italian manager’s expensive rebuilding of the Tottenham squad began poorly, with Spurs suffering a 3-0 defeat to Brentford on the opening weekend of the new Premier League season.
Savinho joins a growing list of expensive arrivals at Tottenham, including Mateus Fernandes, Sandro Tonali and Jan Paul van Hecke. Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson and Martin Dubravka have also joined the club on free transfers.
De Zerbi praised Savinho’s qualities and expressed his excitement about working with the Brazilian.
“Savio is a player who brings energy, imagination and quality in wide positions. He has the courage to attack defenders and the ability to change a game with his creativity,” he said.
“We’re very pleased to have him with us, and I’m looking forward to working with him, helping him continue to grow and seeing him bring his personality to the team.”
Manchester City could reportedly receive an additional £10 million in add-ons depending on the conditions of the deal.
There could also be further business between the two clubs, with Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush reportedly expected to leave Manchester City for Tottenham before the transfer window closes next week.
Savinho joined Manchester City from Troyes, one of the clubs controlled by City’s ownership group, for £30 million in 2024.
He first attracted widespread attention during an impressive loan spell at Girona, another City Football Group club. However, he has struggled to reproduce that form since moving to England.
Savinho made 84 appearances for Manchester City and scored just seven goals, while the club failed to win either the Premier League or Champions League during Pep Guardiola’s final two seasons in charge.
