The Federal Ministry of Education Nigeria has disbursed ₦11.8 billion to 6,842 academic and non-academic staff across tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
The beneficiaries come from 141 institutions, including federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. A total of 34,000 applicants from 219 institutions have been verified so far.
The loan was provided under the Tertiary Institutions Staff Support Fund (TISSF), a programme funded by the Ministry and the Tertiary Education Trust Fund. The initiative is designed to improve the welfare, career development, and financial stability of staff in higher institutions.
Under the scheme, eligible staff can access interest-free loans of up to ₦10 million.
Data shows that staff from federal universities account for 59 percent of applicants, followed by polytechnics at 23 percent and colleges of education at 18 percent.
The TISSF was launched in 2025 as part of broader efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s education sector.
In addition, 240 e-tricycles have been distributed across 12 institutions under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative.
The programme also includes other initiatives such as the EduRevamp Teacher Platform, a digital training system aimed at improving teachers’ skills, and the School Safety Portal developed in partnership with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to enhance security in schools.
According to the ministry, the EduRevamp platform has recorded 37,000 registered users, with 18,000 teachers fully enrolled in its training modules.
Key features of the loan programme include zero percent interest, a maximum loan of ₦10 million per staff member, and a requirement that applicants must have at least five years remaining before retirement to qualify.
