Mikel Arteta has urged Arsenal to embrace the pressure of the Premier League title race as they prepare for a crucial clash against Manchester City.
Arsenal head into the match with a six-point lead over City, although their rivals have a game in hand. A win for City could significantly shift momentum in the title race as the season approaches its final stages.
The Gunners have struggled for consistency in recent weeks, losing three of their last five matches across all competitions. They suffered defeat to City in the League Cup final, were knocked out of the FA Cup by Southampton, and also lost at home to Bournemouth in the league.
Despite these setbacks, Arsenal progressed to the Champions League semi-finals after edging past Sporting Lisbon with a 1-0 aggregate win following a goalless draw.
Arteta believes his team has earned the right to be in contention and described the opportunity to face City as a privilege, especially against what he called one of the best teams and managers in the league’s history.
Arsenal are aiming to win their first English league title since 2004, having finished as runners-up in the past three seasons. In previous campaigns, they lost strong leads that allowed City to overtake them.
Arteta noted that a victory against City would significantly strengthen Arsenal’s position, with only six games remaining in the season. However, he acknowledged that every Premier League match is difficult and that the result would only slightly shift the balance.
He also encouraged his players to use the disappointment of their League Cup defeat to City as motivation for the upcoming encounter.
Arsenal have struggled at the Etihad Stadium, failing to win any of their last 10 league matches there since 2015. Nevertheless, Arteta insisted his team will approach the game with the intention to win rather than settle for a draw.
