Investigators say the gunman who attempted to storm a gala dinner attended by Donald Trump had planned to target top government officials, as concerns grow over security at the event.
Trump was rushed out of a Washington hotel ballroom by Secret Service agents after the suspect tried to break through a security checkpoint. Surveillance footage later showed the gunman attempting to sprint past guards before weapons were drawn.
Following an exchange of gunfire, the suspect was apprehended at the scene and remained in custody while being questioned, ahead of a scheduled court appearance.
Acting US Attorney General Todd Blanche said preliminary findings suggest the attacker was targeting members of the administration, though no clear motive has yet been established. He added that the suspect was not actively cooperating with investigators.
Authorities revealed that the suspect was armed with multiple weapons, including a shotgun, handgun and knives, and had been staying at the hotel where the event took place. Investigators also traced his travel route from Los Angeles to Chicago and then to Washington.
The incident caused panic at the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, attended by top political figures including First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, cabinet members, lawmakers and other high-profile guests.
Trump later suggested the attacker may have acted alone, describing him as a possible “lone wolf.” One law enforcement officer was shot at close range but was protected by a vest and did not sustain critical injuries.
Investigators linked the suspect to a residence in Torrance, California, while reports identified him as a 31-year-old man from the Los Angeles area.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about presidential security, especially given previous assassination attempts involving Trump, including a 2024 rally shooting in Pennsylvania and another incident near a golf course in Florida.
The venue for the gala, the Washington Hilton, has historical significance as the site where former US President Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981.
The shooting occurred less than two days before a planned state visit by King Charles III and Queen Camilla to the United States.
