Britain’s monarch, King Charles III, was “greatly relieved” that Donald Trump, his wife Melania Trump, and other guests were unharmed after a shooting at a Washington media gala.
The incident occurred late Saturday during the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, less than 48 hours before the king and Queen Camilla are scheduled to begin a four-day state visit to the United States. The palace stated that the monarch was being fully informed of developments, while discussions were ongoing with US officials to assess how the incident might affect the visit.
It is understood that the king and queen privately reached out to the Trumps to express sympathy for those affected and gratitude to security services for preventing further harm.
Earlier, senior UK minister Darren Jones said British and US security teams were working closely to ensure appropriate arrangements are in place for the upcoming visit.
According to Trump, one law enforcement officer was shot at close range but did not appear to be critically injured.
During the planned visit — organised to mark 250 years of American independence — Charles and Camilla are expected to visit Washington and New York. The king is also set to become the first British monarch to address Congress since Queen Elizabeth II did so in 1991. The royal couple are also expected to have tea with Trump and Melania and attend a state dinner.
The development comes amid broader tensions between the UK and the US, including disagreements over the Iran war and other political issues. Trump has previously criticised British Prime Minister Keir Starmer over his stance on the conflict, as well as on immigration and energy policies.
Starmer later spoke with Trump by phone, expressing relief that the President and First Lady were safe and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured officer. They also discussed the need to restore shipping operations in the Strait of Hormuz due to its importance to the global economy and cost of living worldwide.
