The White House has launched a 24-hour digital streaming channel, “Trump TV: The Essentials Station,” amid an escalating dispute between President Donald Trump’s administration and several major US news organisations.
The channel went live on Monday through the White House’s official YouTube channel and is also available through the White House website.
The White House says the platform will feature “top videos, major remarks, and must-see highlights” from the Trump administration, streaming around the clock and updated in real time.
Rather than operating as a conventional television network, Trump TV is a government-run digital stream featuring selected footage of Trump and his administration, including speeches, announcements and other public appearances.
Its initial programming included an archive of Trump’s July 3 speech at Mount Rushmore and footage from his January 2025 inauguration.
The launch came on the same day CNN, MS NOW and Politico filed a federal lawsuit challenging the administration’s decision to bar their journalists from the White House.
The three organisations argue that the restrictions violate their First Amendment rights and have asked a federal judge to restore their access. A hearing on their request was scheduled for Wednesday.
Trump announced the ban on Friday, accusing the three organisations of publishing what he described as “fake news”. His administration has maintained that while the First Amendment protects freedom of the press, it does not guarantee individual news organisations access to the White House.
US TV Pool Suspended
The dispute has also disrupted the traditional White House television pool, through which ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox and NBC rotate responsibility for filming presidential events and share the footage with other broadcasters.
CNN was scheduled to provide pool coverage on Monday, but the other four networks declined to replace it after the White House barred CNN from the premises.
In a joint statement, the five networks said the public had “a vital interest in receiving accurate, independent information about its government” and argued that no administration should restrict a news organisation because it objects to its reporting.
The suspension meant there was no traditional television pool coverage of several presidential events on Monday, including the unveiling of a new helipad at the White House.
The White House instead relied on its own video feed for the helipad ceremony, but viewers struggled to hear Trump’s remarks amid the sound of a helicopter.
Trump Defends Media Restrictions
Trump has defended his decision, accusing the affected organisations of biased or inaccurate reporting.
Vice President JD Vance also defended the restrictions, saying the organisations could continue reporting but would no longer have access to offices and facilities inside the White House.
Trump has previously had a contentious relationship with sections of the US news media, frequently accusing outlets of unfair coverage of his administration.
The latest dispute, however, has escalated into a legal challenge and an unusual suspension of the television pool that has traditionally provided shared footage of presidential events.
The launch of Trump TV gives the White House a direct digital platform for distributing its own footage and administration messaging without depending on the traditional television pool.
The White House promoted the new channel as a place to bring the administration’s “biggest moments” together, while critics have described the initiative as an attempt to create a government-controlled alternative to independent news coverage.
