Prominent United States Senator Lindsey Graham, a longtime ally of President Donald Trump, has died at the age of 71 following what his office described as a brief and sudden illness.
In a statement released on his official X account, Graham’s office announced that he passed away on the evening of Saturday, July 11, adding that his family had requested privacy while expressing gratitude for the prayers and support received during the difficult period.
Lindsey Graham began his political career in the U.S. House of Representatives after being elected in 1994. He later won election to the U.S. Senate in 2002 and was re-elected in 2008, 2014 and 2020. Most recently, he served as Chairman of the Senate Budget Committee.
Reacting to his death, President Donald Trump described Graham as one of the greatest senators and a true American patriot. He praised the late lawmaker for his dedication to public service and said he would be greatly missed.
South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster also paid tribute, describing Graham as an irreplaceable leader and one of the fiercest advocates for both South Carolina and the United States. He further praised him as a loyal and steadfast friend.
Throughout his political career, Graham was known for his strong support for Israel and his firm stance on foreign policy, particularly regarding Iran.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog expressed shock and sadness over the senator’s death, describing him as a beacon of moral clarity and a steadfast supporter of the U.S.-Israel relationship. Herzog said Israel would always remember Graham’s unwavering support during difficult times and praised his commitment to justice, truth and loyalty.
