Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured that all victims abducted during the recent attack on schools in Oyo State will be rescued, while condemning the reported killing of one of the kidnapped teachers.
The President gave the assurance in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Gunmen had invaded the Esiele community in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State last Friday, abducting teachers, pupils and students from Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School.
According to the statement, security agencies have launched coordinated operations aimed at rescuing the victims and arresting the attackers and their collaborators.
President Tinubu described the killing of one of the abducted teachers as barbaric and extended condolences to Seyi Makinde, the state government and families of the victims.
“I am saddened by the reported killing of one of the teachers kidnapped by the gunmen who invaded the community,” Tinubu said.
“The Federal Government is working with the Oyo State government to rescue all the victims.”
He also commended the Nigeria Police Force, particularly the Inspector-General of Police and police commissioners in Oyo and Kwara States, for deploying tactical and Intelligence Response Team operatives to the area.
According to the President, the Inspector-General of Police is personally leading a technology-driven operation aimed at securing the release of the abducted victims.
Tinubu added that the incident further strengthens the argument for the creation of state police across Nigeria to improve security in underserved communities.
He urged the National Assembly of Nigeria to accelerate the passage of laws establishing state police.
Governor Makinde had earlier confirmed that seven teachers and an unspecified number of pupils were abducted during the attack.
He also disclosed that one of the abducted teachers, believed to be a Mathematics teacher, was killed by the attackers.
Meanwhile, teachers in Ogbomoso staged a peaceful protest on Monday, shutting down classroom activities and marching to the TESCOM office to demand stronger security measures in schools and the immediate rescue of the remaining victims.
The protesters carried placards calling on government authorities to improve school safety and protect both teachers and students from further attacks.
