The Federal Government has commended Saudi Arabia for offering fully funded scholarships to 50 Nigerian students in petroleum and mineral studies.
The scholarship was announced during a meeting between the Saudi Ambassador to Nigeria, Yousef bin Mohammed Al-Balawi, and the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, in Abuja.
The government described the initiative as a strategic investment in Nigeria’s human capital development and a sign of strong bilateral relations between both countries. According to the minister, the programme aligns with efforts to strengthen key sectors of the economy through capacity building.
He explained that the scholarship is not just an educational programme but a long-term investment in Nigeria’s future, particularly in critical sectors such as petroleum and solid minerals, which are vital for economic growth and diversification.
The programme is expected to run annually, with 50 Nigerian students benefiting each year, ensuring a steady supply of skilled professionals for important industries.
The minister also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening its relationship with Saudi Arabia and implementing existing agreements, including pending collaborations in broadcasting and other sectors.
He further expressed Nigeria’s solidarity with Saudi Arabia amid tensions in the Gulf region, calling for peace and diplomatic solutions.
Ambassador Al-Balawi, in his remarks, said the scholarship—facilitated through the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals—covers tuition, travel, accommodation, and monthly stipends.
He described the initiative as a reflection of genuine cooperation and a meaningful investment in the future of Nigerian youth, while also highlighting ongoing efforts to expand trade and investment ties between both nations.
