Middlesbrough of England holding midfielder, John Obi Mikel, is on the verge of losing the national team captaincy, if the words of the team’s manager, Gernot Rohr are anything to go by.
Rohr affirmed that the Al Nassr of Saudi Arabia winger, Ahmed Musa remained the team’s captain, saying Mikel must work for a place in the team.
He posited: “Musa has demonstrated qualities of a good leader.
“He is the captain of the team and the other guy (Mikel) will have to strive hard to return to the team.
“He might be starting from the bench if he eventually make the final list to the Nations Cup in June but we see how it goes in the coming days.”
Media reports however claimed that Mikel turned down a chance to return to the Nigeria team to focus on Middlesbrough’s play-off push.
He was said to had declined an approach to play in last week’s Super Eagles games against Seychelles and Egypt.
It can be recalled that former Super Eagles handler Samson Siasia withdrew the captain’s band from Musa at the instance of Mikel, who claimed to have broken into the national ranks before the Saudi Arabia-based star.
