National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, has held high-level talks with a United States delegation led by Frank Garcia, the newly appointed US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, as both countries seek to deepen their security partnership.
The meeting took place in Abuja and marked Garcia’s first official visit to Nigeria since assuming office on June 1, 2026. His visit forms part of a wider diplomatic tour of West Africa, which also includes Côte d’Ivoire and Mali.
During the meeting, both sides discussed ways to strengthen the long-standing relationship between Nigeria and the United States, with particular emphasis on security cooperation. They also reviewed progress made under the Nigeria–US Joint Working Group and explored opportunities to expand collaboration in tackling shared security challenges.
According to Ribadu, the discussions reaffirmed the commitment of both governments to sustained dialogue, stronger cooperation and coordinated efforts in addressing issues of mutual interest.
In a statement after the meeting, the National Security Adviser said the engagement further reinforced the enduring partnership between Nigeria and the United States. He noted that both countries remain committed to enhancing cooperation and advancing shared security priorities.
Frank Garcia brings extensive experience in national security and intelligence to his new position. Before joining the US State Department, he served for nearly three decades in the United States Navy. He also worked as a senior adviser to the Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and later served as Staff Director for the Defence Intelligence and Overhead Architecture Subcommittee.
His confirmation filled a key diplomatic position that had remained vacant for more than a year, during which the bureau’s responsibilities were handled by acting officials.
The meeting reflects the continued efforts of Nigeria and the United States to strengthen bilateral relations and enhance cooperation in addressing regional and international security challenges.
