Jesse Marsch has been sacked by Leeds United following the 1-0 defeat by Nottingham Forest on Sunday.
The 49-year-old American, who succeeded Marcelo Bielsa almost one year ago in February 2022, has been dismissed with the club on the brink of the relegation zone, ahead of 18th-placed Everton by goal difference alone.
Marsch leaves the club after a run of seven Premier League games without a victory, having not won in the top flight since the penultimate round of fixtures before the World Cup break on November 5.
Leeds have won just four league games all season and fans have increasingly lost patience with Marsch’s football, with the timing of Everton’s much-needed victory under new manager Sean Dyche likely to have influenced thinking at Elland Road.
Speaking after the defeat against Nottingham Forest last weekend, the American said: “I take full responsibility and I have to find a way to turn performances into winning.
“I understand the frustration and doubts and I accept it. I have to turn the good things into results or we find ourselves in a stressful situation.
“Internally, we have belief here and the players are all in. We’re trying to put it all together but we have to make sure that by Wednesday we are ready for a big result.”
Marsch had picked up only two wins in Leeds’s last 17 league matches and that was evidently not enough for him to keep his job in a tight relegation battle.
There were chants of “Jesse, Jesse, time to go” during the loss at the weekend. It came after similar calls from the fans during the club’s 2-1 loss to Aston Villa on January 13.
Leeds now face a couple of difficult fixtures in their upcoming games. They play Manchester United twice in the league next week, starting at Old Trafford on Wednesday.
