Ford dealers will replace the master cylinder in affected F-150s, Expeditions, and Lincoln Navigators.
The recall is an expansion of two previous Ford recalls for the same issue
Another day, another Ford recall; this time the automaker is recalling thousands of vehicles for a dangerous braking issue. In Canada, Transport Canada lists 13,875 trucks and SUVs as being affected, while the U.S. has recalled another 123,611 vehicles, according to documents provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). On the Transport Canada site, it also notes the recalled vehicles are specifically those equipped with a 3.5L EcoBoost engine.
This recall is an expansion of a 2022 recall (2022-115), which was in turn an expansion of a previous 2020 recall for the same issue (2020-252) that originally affected just F-150 models from years 2014 through 2017.
The issue stems from the brake master cylinder, which may leak brake fluid from the front wheel circuit and into the brake booster. A brake-fluid leak could cause the brakes to operate at a reduced capacity. If that happens, it may require the driver to stop earlier than usual, which could increase the risk of a crash. If a significant amount of fluid is lost, the brakes may become inoperable altogether. However, before things get that bad, there should be a red brake warning notification on the dash.
The affected vehicles for this new recall include:
2017 Ford F-150
2017-2018 Ford Expedition
2017-2018 Lincoln Navigator
(Note that the 2018 Ford F-150 is also a part of the recall in the U.S.)
Ford will notify owners by mail and advise them to take their vehicle to a dealership to be inspected. The brake master cylinder will be replaced, free of charge; and if necessary, the brake booster will also be replaced.
