President Bola Tinubu has announced national honours for several Nigerians who played important roles in the pro-democracy struggle, especially during and after the June 12, 1993 political crisis.
The President said the award recipients include activists, journalists, lawyers, intellectuals, politicians, and military officers who made sacrifices, faced persecution, imprisonment, or exile while fighting for the restoration of democracy in Nigeria.
Some of those honoured are Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin, Ayoka Lawani, Tunde Fagbenle, Oladele Alake, Olatunji Bello, Louis Odion, Segun Babatope, Sam Omatseye, Ademola Osinubi, Bola Bolawole, Femi Kusa, Debo Adeniran, Ayo Opadokun, Richard Akinnola, Niran Malaolu, and Major-General Ishola Williams (rtd), among others.
Posthumous honours were also announced for Dr Arthur Nwankwo and Ben Charles-Obi.
Several military officers who supported the June 12 democratic struggle were recognised, including Col. Sambo Dasuki, Major General Chris Eze, Major General M.A. Garba, Brigadier General Lawal Jaafaru Isa, Col. Lawan Gwadabe, Brigadier Jonathan Ndam Temlong, and Brigadier Yahaya Abubakar, the Etsu Nupe.
Tinubu stated that the June 12 movement remains a landmark chapter in Nigeria’s democratic history and praised those who contributed to the country’s return to civilian rule.
He added that the complete list of national honours recipients will be released in the coming days.
