Adedokun Waliyu A Hamas delegation met Egyptian intelligence chief Hassan Rashad on Sunday to discuss ways to advance the implementation of a post-war plan for Gaza, according to Egypt’s state news agency.
The delegation, led by Hamas chief Khalil al-Hayya, reaffirmed its commitment to completing US President Donald Trump’s plan.
Hamas said in late July that it was prepared to hand over its weapons to a technical committee that would govern Gaza under a 15-point plan announced by Trump’s Board of Peace.
However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected the plan and said Israeli forces would not withdraw from Gaza until Hamas is fully disarmed.
The Hamas delegation arrived in Egypt on Saturday evening ahead of a planned visit to the region by Trump’s envoy, Jared Kushner.
A Hamas official said the talks in the Mediterranean city of El-Alamein would focus on the latest developments in negotiations and efforts to persuade Israel to comply with the agreement, including the 15-point roadmap.
The official said the delegation would brief Egyptian officials on what Hamas described as Israeli violations of the ceasefire agreement. Hayya was also expected to reaffirm Hamas’s readiness to implement the agreement once Israel commits to it.
Another Hamas source said arrangements were being made for a meeting between the Hamas negotiating delegation, Nickolay Mladenov, the Board of Peace’s high representative for Gaza, and US officials during Kushner’s visit to Egypt.
The meeting would focus on obstacles to implementing the agreement.
The source also said contacts were continuing with Egyptian, Qatari and Turkish mediators in an effort to persuade Israel to comply with the agreement.
Kushner is expected to visit Israel and Egypt during the week in an attempt to bridge differences over the Gaza plan rejected by Netanyahu.
