Germany have appointed Jürgen Klopp as the new head coach of the national football team, with the former Liverpool manager tasked with rebuilding the country’s struggling football fortunes.
The German Football Association (DFB) announced the appointment on Friday, confirming that Klopp has signed a contract that will keep him in charge until after the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
Klopp succeeds Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned earlier this month following Germany’s disappointing Round of 32 exit to Paraguay at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The defeat marked Germany’s third consecutive early World Cup elimination since winning the tournament in 2014.
Speaking at his unveiling in Frankfurt, Klopp described the appointment as the greatest honour of his professional career.
He pledged to give everything he has to restore Germany’s status among the world’s top football nations.
The DFB confirmed that Klopp will officially begin work on August 15, 2026.
Before accepting the national team role, Klopp had been serving as Head of Global Soccer for Red Bull, overseeing several football clubs under the company’s ownership. The German Football Association said no transfer fee was paid to secure his release, but it will donate one million euros to Red Bull’s Wings for Life charity, which supports research into spinal cord injuries.
Klopp returns to coaching after stepping down as Liverpool manager in 2024 following one of the club’s most successful periods. During his time at Anfield, he guided Liverpool to the Premier League title, ending a 30-year wait, and also won the UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Community Shield.
He previously enjoyed successful spells with Mainz and Borussia Dortmund.
Germany, four-time FIFA World Cup champions and three-time European champions, have endured a difficult decade, winning only one knockout match across the last three World Cups and two European Championships.
Klopp is expected to build a new-look squad around young stars Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala, while experienced players such as Joshua Kimmich and Manuel Neuer approach the latter stages of their international careers.
His first squad selection is expected in September ahead of four UEFA Nations League matches, beginning with a fixture against the Netherlands on September 24.
