Gauff Saves Two Match Points, Defeats Andreeva To Reach US Open Semi-Finals

Coco Gauff fought back from a set down and saved two match points to defeat Mirra Andreeva 2-6, 7-6 (9/7), 6-2 in a thrilling US Open quarter-final on Wednesday.

The fourth-ranked American advanced to the semi-finals, where she will face Elena Rybakina, who defeated Zheng Qinwen 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Rybakina is set to become the new world number one in next week’s rankings, adding further significance to her clash with Gauff.

Gauff, 22, struggled in the opening set as Andreeva dominated proceedings and claimed it 6-2. The Russian, however, was unable to close out the match despite holding two match points in the second-set tie-break.

Gauff held her nerve to save both match points before taking the tie-break 9-7 and forcing a deciding set.

The American then seized control in the third set, breaking Andreeva twice before serving out the match 6-2.

“It was just trying to leave the court without regrets,” Gauff said after the dramatic comeback.

The victory extended Gauff’s unbeaten record against Andreeva to six matches. She had previously defeated the Russian five times, including during her run to the 2023 US Open title.

In the other women’s semi-final, defending champion Aryna Sabalenka will face fellow American Jessica Pegula.

Gauff said she expects a difficult encounter against Rybakina, adding: “These are the moments you live for.”
