Government school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have begun an indefinite strike action over unmet demands by the Federal Government, leading to deserted school premises with no students or teachers in sight.
A visit to some schools in the FCT, including LEA Primary School, Area 10, Garki, and Government Science Technical College, Area 3, Garki, confirmed that academic activities have been completely halted.
The strike follows a directive from the FCT Wing Executive Council of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, which instructed both primary and secondary school teachers to commence an indefinite strike.
In a communique jointly signed by Chairman Abdullahi Shafa, Secretary Margaret Jethro, and Publicity Secretary Ibukun Adekeye, the union stated that the decision came after an emergency meeting to review a seven-day ultimatum issued to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.
The ultimatum, which had earlier been given to address the teachers’ concerns, expired without any response, prompting the union to take action.
The union explained that the strike became necessary due to the continued silence on their demands, especially in light of the prevailing economic challenges affecting teachers in the FCT.
