At least 193 million people across Europe are expected to experience temperatures above 35°C on Saturday, according to AFP calculations, an increase from Friday as the heatwave shifts eastwards.
Germany is expected to be among the hardest-hit countries, with about 82 million people forecast to experience temperatures above 30°C on Saturday. Of these, approximately 75 million are expected to face temperatures exceeding 35°C.
In Hungary, more than nine million people, nearly the country’s entire population, are expected to endure temperatures above 35°C.
According to the analysis, about 404 million people across Europe, excluding Turkey, are expected to experience temperatures above 30°C, representing a slight decrease from the previous day.
On Friday, at least 150 million people were forecast to experience temperatures above 35°C, while about 420 million people were expected to see temperatures exceeding 30°C.
Britain, France, Spain, and Switzerland have all recorded new temperature records during the ongoing heatwave. The extreme temperatures are now expected to spread across large parts of Hungary, the Czech Republic, Austria, and other countries.
In France, temperatures above 35°C are expected to affect about 26 million people, fewer than the previous day.
AFP stated that its analysis is based on forecasts from the German Meteorological Service and 2025 population projections from the Joint Research Centre, and is consistent with figures published by the Austrian non-governmental organisation, Klimadashboard.
