U.S. President Donald Trump has promised to give every American adult $5,000 if Republicans retain control of Congress in the November midterm elections.
Speaking at the Republican National Midterm Convention in Dallas on Wednesday, Trump said the payment would be known as the “Trump dividend” and urged voters to support Republican candidates.
“If the Republicans win, you win with us and you get $5,000,” Trump told the crowd.
Trump did not explain how the proposed payments would be funded. If extended to every adult American, the programme could cost more than $1 trillion. He only said the money would come from the fact that “our country is making so much money.”
The president also urged his supporters to treat the election as though he himself were on the ballot.
“I’m asking you to pretend that I’m on the ballot,” Trump said, repeating: “I’m on the ballot, I’m on the ballot — just one more time.”
The promise comes as Republicans face difficult political headwinds ahead of the November 3 election. Opinion polls cited in the report put Trump’s approval ratings in the low 30s, with voters increasingly concerned about high prices and the war with Iran.
Decision Desk HQ projects Democrats could win the House by 230 seats to 205 and take control of the Senate by 51-49.
Trump Defends Iran War
Trump also strongly defended the ongoing U.S. war with Iran, predicting victory and arguing that oil prices would fall once the conflict ends.
“Oil will be going down as soon as we win the war with Iran,” he said.
He also suggested that the strategically important Strait of Hormuz should be renamed after him.
Trump accused Democrats of pushing the United States toward communism and urged Republican voters to turn out in November.
Republicans are campaigning on issues including tax cuts, immigration enforcement, manufacturing and lower prescription drug prices.
The two-day Republican midterm convention is the first national convention specifically organised for a U.S. midterm election. Rather than nominating candidates or conducting formal party business, the event is focused on promoting Trump’s record and mobilising support for Republican candidates.
