The Katsina State Government has announced that retired Major General Rabe Abubakar has died while being held captive by bandits.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Katsina State, Dr. Nasiru Mu’azu, said the retired military officer died from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension while in captivity.
The commissioner noted that despite sustained and coordinated efforts by the Katsina State Government and various security agencies to secure the General’s freedom, the rescue mission unfortunately ended in tragedy.
He described the development as a tragic loss to the state and the nation.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the General’s death while in bandits’ captivity,” the statement read.
According to the government, the late Major General’s abduction and eventual death represent not only a painful loss to his immediate family and Katsina State but also a monumental loss to Nigeria, given his years of dedicated service to the country.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda expressed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and the entire nation over the demise of the retired military officer.
The governor described the incident as a “dark moment” and a stark reminder of the growing threat posed by criminal elements operating across communities.
“This tragic incident underscores the urgent need for a united and intensified effort in confronting the forces of insecurity threatening the peace and stability of our communities,” Governor Radda stated.
He assured residents that the state government remains resolute in its commitment to combating banditry and other forms of criminality, stressing that those responsible for the retired General’s abduction and death would be pursued and brought to justice.
The governor further reaffirmed the state’s determination to continue working closely with the Federal Government and security agencies to restore lasting peace and safeguard lives and property across Katsina State.
As condolences continue to pour in from across the country, the Katsina State Government urged citizens to keep the family of the late Major General in their prayers during this difficult period.
“May the soul of Retired Major General Rabe Abdulkadir Abubakar rest in eternal peace,” the statement added.
