A deadly attack by suspected bandits on Government Secondary School, Iluke Bunu, in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State has left three people dead, including a vice principal and a six-year-old boy.
The attack occurred around 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, raising fresh concerns about security in the area.
According to the Kogi State Police Command, the attackers arrived on about 40 motorcycles and invaded the community in large numbers, allegedly intending to kidnap students and residents.
Following distress calls from the area, the Divisional Police Officer of Kabba ‘A’ Division immediately mobilised a joint security response. Police operatives, members of the Police Mobile Force, other tactical units, military personnel, and local vigilantes were deployed to the scene.
Security operatives engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle, forcing them to flee into nearby bushes.
The police said preliminary investigations have not confirmed any successful mass abduction of students or residents. However, investigations and assessments are still ongoing to determine the full extent of the incident.
Among the three victims killed were the school’s vice principal, a six-year-old child, and a 70-year-old resident.
Police also confirmed that one of the attackers was killed during the exchange of gunfire. A member of the joint security team sustained gunshot injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.
The Commissioner of Police has directed security personnel to continue bush-combing operations and confidence-building patrols throughout the affected area.
Joint security teams are also carrying out intensive operations to track down the fleeing suspects and prevent further attacks.
Residents have been urged to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information that may assist ongoing investigations and security operations.
The police said further updates would be released as investigations continue.
