The Nigerian government under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu has invited leaders and stakeholders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to an emergency meeting over the ongoing nationwide strike.
It was learnt that the meeting is slated for Tuesday and would be held at the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission with the aim of tendering a convincing minimum wage that would stop the strike.
The labour union had commenced an indefinite strike on Monday despite last-minute moves by the National Assembly leadership to avert the industrial action.
The representatives of organised labour on Sunday said they lacked the power to call off the strike, adding that there was no going back on the industrial action on Monday.
The labour leaders, however, promised to meet internally later to discuss the appeal made by the leadership of the Senate and the House of Representatives to suspend the strike, in order not to compound the hardship of Nigerians.
It had also been reported how the strike has affected major sectors of the country, including judiciary, aviation and education.
However, the special adviser to President Tinubu on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga claimed the ongoing nationwide strike embarked upon by Labour unions was due to personal grudges against the current government.
He claimed that the strike was harming Nigerians by disrupting activities in hospitals, airports, and many other government agencies.
