West Ham United manager, David Moyes has revealed that he turned down the opportunity to sign Argentina World Cup winner, Julian Alvarez.
The 22-year-old Manchester City star has emerged as one of the most promising finishers in the world.
Alvarez joined Manchester City from River Plate for £14 million in 2022, and has scored eight goals in 10 first-team starts.
The Argentina international helped the South Americans to claim the 2022 FIFA World Cup trophy in Qatar, scoring four times.
Speaking to the Diary of a CEO podcast, Moyes said he did not sign Alvarez during the player’s River Plate days despite having the chance to do so.
He said: “I think it’s the ones I’ve missed, the ones where you say, ‘Nah, I don’t think he’s quite good enough.’ I’ve had hundreds of them,” the former Everton, Manchester United and now West Ham United boss said.
“I bought in a new scout who says, ‘Look, you should go for Alvarez at River Plate,” he added.
Moyes said this while acknowledging the impact of the 22-year-old forward in Argentina’s success in Qatar.
“I thought he’s maybe not quite the one we want,” he said, adding that the Hammers already had Michail Antonio, who was doing really well at that time.
