The Yoruba from all walks of life will converge on Ibadan on Thursday for a summit on the agitation for the restructuring of Nigeria.
At the summit, the Yoruba are expected to take their position on the restructuring debate.
The event will also provide the people the opportunity to advance their position on how federalism can be meaningfully practised in a multi-ethnic country like Nigeria.
The summit, according to the Secretary, Planning Committee, Yoruba Summit 2017 and the National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin, will commence at 10am at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba in Ibadan and would be chaired by a renowned legal practitioner, Chief Afe Babalola (SAN).
He said, “One of Yoruba foremost historians, a Second Republic Senator and author of ‘History of The Yoruba’, Prof. Banji Akintoye, will deliver a keynote on the subject of restructuring to be garnished with solidarity speeches from groups and notable leaders in attendance. The Summit promises to be a game changer.
“The solemn gathering to be chaired by a legal luminary, Chief Afe Babalola (SAN), will take firm and consensual positions on the issue of the day in the country – restructuring. All socio-cultural groups in Yoruba land are to be joined by professional bodies, market organisations, religious groups, workers and students associations in what promises to be the biggest gathering of Yoruba people in recent time.
“The summit will also be an opportunity for the Yoruba to reaffirm federalism as an effective and functional constitution for a multi-ethnic country like Nigeria which has been the fulcrum of Yoruba position from the 1950 Ibadan conference leading to the federal constitution negotiated in 1960 by Nigeria’s founding fathers like Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe and Sir Ahmadu Bello.”
