The Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly Honourable Debo Ogundoyin has said that the Oyo State House Of Assembly is working on preventive measures to tackle violence against women, children and men in the State.
He made this call while addressing members of staffs of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) alongside HOSEC foundation, NAWOJ who led a peaceful protest to the State Secretariat today 16th June against the continuous cases of rape, defilement of innocent children and general sexual and gender based violence happening in the State.
The Acting State Coordinator Mrs. Olamide Akintayo who led the team charged the Members of the House of Assembly to look into the ugly incident happening in the State and protect our girls from further harrasement.
“We call on you today to speak against rape as our silence could mean approval of such behaviour that continues to erode our moral standard as human beings. Young girls who are supposed to be the hope of their families and pride of our nation are being cut down, humiliated and killed at their tender ages without justice to deter a repeat of such behaviour and protect other girls from experiencing such violence.”
In response, Hon. Ogundoyin said the House of Assembly is looking to achieve higher conviction rate and also stop the act as the after effect on the victim is something that can last forever.
“What the Assembly is looking to achieve is higher conviction rate, secondly preventive measures to violence against children, women and men in general because we can put one measures and odds to punish offenders, but one of the most important thing is to make sure that we deter the act of the violence against women because prevention is better than cure.”
“We don’t just want to be fighting what has already happened but we rather even prevent it from happening in the first place because we all know the psychological effect that rape can have especially on women. It’s something that can last forever. We’ll do everything in our power to make sure that we avoid that occurrence.” He said
Also addressing the group is the Honourable representing Ogbomosho North, Hon. Adewunmi Oladeji chairman house committee on women affairs and social inclusion, she stressed that the House of Assembly is on top of the game and they are working on stringent punishment to be melted on offenders.
“It’s not that we are here doing nothing. We have two bills lined up for these important issue that is tormenting all of us. We have child sexual offences bill, those that enjoy getting getting down on minors and stringent punishment attached to it also and it has passed through the second reading. Last week, a motion came up that stringent punishment should be melted and whoever is found guilty of these offences. So we are on top of the situation.” She concluded.
