The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) is working to fix a system-wide PRESTO fare vending machine outage.
The incident was reported just before 6:30 a.m. on Monday, and the TTC says it’s investigating the cause.
A TTC spokesperson said customers cannot use the credit/debit card option to add value to their PRESTO cards or purchase fare media on vending machines. All other functions are operational.
The TTC noted that customers can continue to use cash for purchasing tickets and other fare media and that the option to check card balances is also working.
“Customers can reload their PRESTO cards using debit/credit at the smaller green re-load machines in stations or use their debit/credit through the open payment system to pay their fare,” a TTC media representative said.

In a statement, Metrolinx referred to the cause of the outage as “an intermittent technical issue affecting some PRESTO vending machines on the TTC.”
In early August, the TTC revealed a new payment method allowing riders to tap their credit or debit cards for fares on the transit system. City of Toronto and provincial officials announced the change would be implemented on August 15.
Riders can use bank cards, including cards on a smartphone or smartwatch, on any type of vehicle. An adult single-use fare on debit or credit is $3.30.
Last year, Metrolinx introduced the option of tapping with a debit or credit card, including those on a phone or watch, to pay fares on GO Transit, UP Express, Brampton Transit, Burlington Transit, Durham Region Transit, Hamilton Street Railway, MiWay, Oakville Transit, and York Region Transit.
