The prime minister is urging both sides to come to a resolution in Canada’s unprecedented double railway work stoppage.
Speaking to reporters Thursday morning at a retirement home in Buckingham, Que., Justin Trudeau said Canadians are counting on both sides to put aside their differences and hammer out a deal.
“My message has been straightforward, it is in the best interest of both sides to continue doing the hard work at the table to find a negotiated resolution,” he said.
“Millions of Canadians, workers, farmers, businesses, right across the country, are counting on both sides to do the work and get to a resolution.”
Federal Labour Minister Steve MacKinnon is in Calgary as talks continue, meeting with both sides but still won’t entertain calls for binding arbitration.
More than 9,000 railway engineers, conductors and yard workers were off the job as of 12:01 a.m. Thursday, as talks between the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC) and both CN and Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) drag on.
