The first notable injury of Blue Jays’ spring training hit on Friday and has at least temporarily sidelined one of the most prominent names in camp.
Top prospect Ricky Tiedemann suffered what the team is describing as left hamstring discomfort during conditioning drills on Friday and as a result won’t get the start for Saturday’s Grapefruit League opener as had been planned.
The team is cautiously hopeful the ailment isn’t serious for the strapping left hander who figures to have a prominent spot on the team’s pitching staff going forward.
“It’s precautionary right now and we’ll get more imaging,” manager John Schneider said. “Encouraging that he finished his conditioning, but taking it a little bit slow with him.”
Schneider said that Tiedemann first felt the discomfort while “running around” in Friday drills at the Jays player development complex.
“We won’t want to put a timeline on it, but we’ll know more tomorrow,” Schneider said.
In place of the southpaw, Chad Dallas will get the start in pre-season opener when the Philadelphia Phillies visit the Jays at TD Ballpark.
