The Oyo State Police Command has debunked the news that is flittering around on the aborted clash between the Hausa and Yoruba people at Sasa Market Oojo Area of Ibadan.
The false alarm was confirmed by the State Commissioner of Police CP Olushina Olukolu who said some hoodlums wanted to initiate the clash with the aims to loot and steal from the market men and women of the market, through a press statement that was issued and signed by the State Police Publicity Relation Officer SP Olugbenga Fadeyi
The CP said “false alarm on alledged conflict between Hausa and Yoruba at Sasa Market who subsequently penetrated the Sasa Market with a view of causing chaos and loot or steal from the market women.”
“Consequently the police moved in swiftly to restore order and normalcy. But in the process, different genre of the incident was circulated by uninformed misguided and mischief makers that there was ongoing clash between the Hausa and Yoruba in Sasa Market Oojo Area of Ibadan. CP Olushina said.
According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police Cp Shina Olukolu and Deputy Commissioner of Police Operation DCP Kehinde Longe personally visited the the scene to access the situation, and it was discovered that the genesis of the conflicts was between some scraps workers and a social miscreants who was earlier prevented from messing up their immediate environment.
“The miscreant went and mobilised others like him to attack the scrap workers. To enable them loot shops and steal valuables, or cash from traders. The police once again quickly deployed and restore law and order in the process nine persons were said to have been injured, while six suspects were arrested and are being interrogated for possible prosecution in the interim, Police are on top of the situation.” CP Olushina Said.
The Commissioner of Police wishes to seize the opportunity to warn mischief makers, social miscreants and other criminally minded individuals in the State to do a rethink before the long arms of the law catches up with them.
“As the police will not under any circumstances shrinks their constitutional responsibilities of protection of lives and properties nor allow any individual or group under any guise to disturb the peace of the State. Hence there is no such situations as such a clash between the Yoruba and Hausa at the Sasa Market.”
Therefore, the CP urged all the law abiding citizens that they should go about with their lawful business and duties without any fear of molestation or disturbance of public peace. In addition, the Commissioner of Police wants to appeal wants to appeal to all and sundry to give peace a chance at allow peace to reign in the State.
