Northern governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other party stakeholders from the region have picked former Senate President Iyorchia Ayu as their candidate for the post of the national chairman of the party.
The post has already been zoned to the north who also was given the latitude of freedom to micro-zone to any of its geopolitical zones.
Ayu, a Benue State indigene, had earlier been endorsed by party stakeholders in the north-central leaders.
He emerged as the consensus on Thursday at a meeting convened at the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge, Asokoro, Abuja.
Before his choice was announced, the northwest was lining up behind former Katsina state governor, Ibrahim Shema while the northeast was pushing forward former Senate Leader, Abdul Ningi.
The other aspirants however stepped down for Ayu following talks with the party stakeholders at the meeting.
Governor Ahmadu Fintiri announced the decision to present the former senate president as the candidate of the north.
He appealed to the rest of the country to support him in the national convention slated for 30-31st of October in Abuja.
In his acceptance, speech, Prof. Ayu vowed to lead the effort to recapture power and rebuild Nigeria.
