President Muhammadu Buhari has been urged to reconside his decision by giving an assent to Nigeria Peace Corps bill to pave the way for youth employment and strength the nation’s security apparatus.
A Public Affairs Commentator, Mr Vincent Adepoju stated this while speaking on the refusal of president Buhari to append to the bill and attendant effects on Nigerian youth and the nation social economic growth.
Adepoju who said federal government hinged its decision on paucity allayed the fear of the government in this direction as the head of NUPEC the mediators, Doctor Chinedu Nneji has assured the Federal Government of his readiness to generate revenues for government citing several avenues with a promise that the remuneration of the newly established agency would not pose any financial burden on government.
Adepoju argued that if Nigerian Peace Corps bill approved there would not be duplication of duties already been carried out by existing security outfits like the Police and Civil as the head of National Unity and Peace Corps (NUPEC the Mediators) Dr. Chinedu Nneji had assured Federal Government that with the establishment of mediation centres in all local and grass root areas of the country, Peace facilitation through dialogue and peace education of all citizens, intelligence gathering, conflict management through civil function modalities would go a long way to ensure peaceful Co existence of the country .
The public affairs commentator hinted that Doctr Nneji has declared his optimism and readiness to work together with his counterpart Mr. Dickson Akor of PCN in order to achieve the mandates of restoring total peace to the country in the face of recurring insurgency and insecurity as well as resolving the issues of Boko Haram, secession agitation, farmers and herdsmen clashes, abduction and other national security issues.
He maintained that records had shown that NUPEC the Mediators as a law abiding group has never joined issue with any statutory agency of government and this had helped to secure acceptance and supervision of the Federal Ministry of Interior and was issued operational licence to wear paramilitary insignias saying the new agency would be a catalyst for peace in Nigeria and not a security threat as presumed by some quarters.
It would be recalled that the bill which is was unanimously passed by both chambers of the National Assembly sought to give legal backing to the body which currently exist in Nigeria as a non-governmental organisations NUPEC the mediators and Peace Corps of Nigeria under an harmonized arrangement.
