The Migrants e-registration exercise has been launched in Ogun State with a call on foreign nationals to take advantage of the initiative to regularize their migration status.
Nigeria Immigration service, Ogun State Comptroller, Mrs Doris Braimah while addressing Journalists in Abeokuta, the state capital, said the purpose of the exercise was to enhance internal security and curb cross border organised crimes in the country.
Mrs Braimah, who pointed out that president Muhammadu Buhari had declared a six- month amnesty for foreigners to register for the exercise, urged other security agencies to support NIS to ensure hitch free exercise
She also appealed to traditional rulers, religious bodies and community leaders to support the service by sensitizing migrants within their localities to comply with the exercise.
The Immigration boss stressed the need for media organisations and citizens to be part of the sensitization drive by ensuring that all foreigners conducting businesses with them were adequately registered.
Flagging off the exercise, the state Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun who commended the Nigeria Immigration service for the initiative, said the exercise would go a long way in checking illegal migration into the country through the state.
Governor Abiodun said electronic registration of foreigners was laudable to ease access to information, adding that the exercise would help to curb inter border crimes.
Some of the migrants Mr. Menon Satish from Indian and a Chinese Mr. che wei who commended the federal government for giving them the opportunity to register said the exercise would boost their economic activities.
