NASA has released a historic image of Earth dipping below the lunar horizon, more than 57 years after the iconic “Earthrise” image was captured during the Apollo 8 mission.
Members of the Artemis II crew captured the image during their record-setting lunar flyby. The original “Earthrise” photograph was taken by astronaut Bill Anders during the first mission to carry humans around the Moon in December 1968.
The development follows pressure from Donald Trump on NASA to land astronauts on the Moon before the end of his second term in 2029.
However, the White House recently proposed a 23 percent reduction in NASA’s overall budget, including significant cuts to its science programs.
During the mission, four Artemis astronauts reached a major milestone by traveling around the far side of the Moon, marking humanity’s deepest venture into space in decades.
Despite challenges faced by the scientific community in the United States, including funding cuts and halted projects, the mission represents a major achievement, as NASA has successfully sent astronauts around the Moon for the first time in over half a century.
