The Senator representing the Lagos East Senatorial District at the Senate, Gbenga Ashafa, said political leaders must be committed to the welfare of their constituents.Ashafa stated this on Friday at the close of a five-day ‘Entrepreneurship Seminar/ Skill Acquisition Training Programme for Constituents of Lagos East,’ in partnership with the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria.According to Ashafa, the exercise was meant to empower many of his constituents towards the attainment of economic self-sustainability.He added that if such was replicated by all political leaders in the country, Nigeria would be a better place.Ashafa said, “Considering the economic challenges that Nigeria has experienced and the effect on majority of Nigerians, we are faced with two choices. The first is to sit down and complain; and the second is to face the challenge by acquiring entrepreneurial skills and contributing our quota to the rejuvenation of our economy. Leaders must adopt the more sensible second option; I am pleased to say I have adopted the second option and we are already seeing the benefit.”Over 120 Lagos East constituents participated in the skill acquisition exercise and were trained in phone repairs, laptop repairs, catering and electronics repairs. At the end of the programme, the participants were empowered with tool boxes and cash to enable them to start their trades.Ashafa also pledged N1.5m to enable the beneficiaries to start a cooperative society and another N1m to be given to the society in six months, making a total pledge of N2.5m.
