It will be recalled that on the 25th of April 2020, the children of famous Ibadan Islamic scholar Alhaji Taofeek Azeez popularly known as Akeugbagold was kidnapped and a substantial amount of money was paid to get back the twins from their custody.
The Oyo Police command Paraded Seven suspected criminals in connection with the kidnap of the Akeugbagold Twins. The kidnappers consists of six male and one female gang namely : Ridwan Taiwo (30), Rafiu Mutiu (35), Olumide Ajala (36), Fatai Akanji (39), Rafiu Modinat (29), Bashiru Mohammed (33), Opeyemi Oyeleye (25) who confessed to the crime to the Police in Ibadan.
According to leader of the team Opeyemi Oyeleye, who happens to be one of the casual workers of Sheik Akeugbagold he said ” I was working with the Sheik as his social media staff, though on casual basis, the Sheik is paying well for me, I even had the privilege to work outside whenever there is need for me to do so, myself and my gang here all teamed up to kidnapped the twins, it was I and my second Bashiru Mohammed that initiated the kidnapping process, and we invited the rest to assist us, we did this just because of the love of money, and at the same time, i can say it’s the work of the devil, I beg the authority to please help us, we have all regretted our actions.”
Also, one of the suspect named Rafiu Mutiu who had the children in his custody, the children were been taken care of by his wife said that he was approached by one Ridwan, a member of the gang that he wants to introduce him to a business.
“Ridwan came to me. He is my friend and we do sit and drink together and he said he wants to introduce me to a business. I was briefed about the job and I agreed to do it. The children were kept in my house I told my wife that the children belongs to my friends that the parents of the children had a misunderstanding so the father that me to keep the children in my house for 3 days then he come and get them afterwards. When the job was completed I was given the sum of Three hundred and fifty thousand naira.”
“Rafiu Modinat who is the only female member within the kidnapping syndicate was detailed to take care of the babies while in a week captivity was arrested in her hideout in Ibadan in connection with the crime and she has confessed to have collected twenty thousand naira from the ransom after they have successfully completed their crime.
According to her “I sell shoes and my husband is an herbalist. When they brought in the children my husband told me they belong to his friend who has a misunderstanding with his wife, he wants the children to stay with them for three days. After three days, I asked why the parents have not come for the children and he said he will come for them on Sunday. On Sunday, they came for them and I was given the sum of twenty thousand naira.” She said
Since the suspected criminals have confessed to the crime, they will soon be charged to court for proper trail.CP Olukolu explained.
In his own account, the father of the kidnapped twins, Sheik Akeugbagold, said I have always be good enough to those people, I don’t even think they can come and did that to me and my household, I empoyed Opeyemi few weeks ago to help manage my social media accounts and we have agreed on a certain amount, I promised to give him a hundred thousand naira, I also give him two thousand naira on daily, I also give One thousand naira to Bashiru as well, after they might have break their fasting with me right in my house, at times we eat together in the same plate, I have also paid part of the agreed payment for their studio and I intend to still pay 200 thousand naira for the studio work
“I can’t believe they can do such a thing to me, they knew my movements, I like Yemi because of his brilliance and advise he used to give whenever we are talking, I don’t know he can mastermind such evil against me. Akeugbagold said.
Items recovered from the suspects include: one locally made single barrel gun, eight live cartridges, two Micra cars with reg no. JJJ 703 BJ and NRK 864 YR respectively, an unregistered TVS motorcycle , cash sum of two million eight hundred and sixty three thousand naira only.
