Ileogbo born Nigerian female weightlifter, Olarinoye Adenike Adijat has won the nation its first gold medal at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.Olarinoye recorded a total of 203kg. The 203kg lift is a new Commonwealth Games record.
On the medals table, Nigeria at present ranks ninth with Australia taking the lead with 13 gold, eight silver and 11 bronze.New Zealand occupies the second position having won seven gold, four silver and two bronze medals.England is third with five gold medals, 12 silver and four bronze.
Edidiong Umoafia will be in action in the men’s 67kg weightlifting event at NEC Hall 1 while Team Nigeria will face Malaysia in the quarter-final of the men’s team table tennis held at NEC Hall 3.Nigeria will stand a chance of winning a medal in the over 71-75kg of the boxing event with Adeyinka Benson set to face Ghana’s Abubakari Quartey in the round of 16.
Completing the action for the day, Rafiatu Lawal will be competing in the women’s 59kg weightlifting at NEC Hall 1.
