About one month after the clash between some indigenes of Ile-Ife and the Arewa community in the town, 21 citizens of Ile-Ife, including a traditional ruler, on Tuesday, dragged the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, before a Federal High Court in Abuja to enforce their fundamental human rights.
The suit was brought pursuant to order 2, Rule 1, Fundamental Rights (Enforcement Procedure) Rules 2 0 0 9, Sections 33, 34, 35, 37,41 AND 46(1) of the constitution.
The National Publicity Secretary of pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin, said, “This commencement of a legal battle is borne out of our belief that the illegality being perpetrated by the police in this unjust and one-sided arrest and detention of our people must be fought with all lawful means at our disposal.”
The plaintiffs in their originating summons filed by a team of lawyers led by Wole Olanipekun (SAN) also claimed N1bn damages.
Other members of the legal team include Ahmed Raji (SAN), Wale Olawonyin (SAN), Sola Ojutalayo (SAN), Gbenga Awosode, A. Awosemo, Muri Agboola, Adewale Adegbami, Bisi Oladosun, Gbenga Omiwole, Wale Balogun and Adeola Adedipe.
