Former Premier League stars, Jermaine Pennant and Jamie O’Hara have hit out at Barcelona defender Gerard Pique after the Spaniard announced his retirement from Football.
Pique shook the football world on Thursday by announcing his retirement from Football at the age of 35.
The former Manchester United centre-back posted a video via his social media channels, informing fans about his decision.
Pique, who will play his last game for Barcelona against Almeria on Saturday, said in the video (via Sky Sports): “Football has given me everything. Barcelona has given me everything. You, culers, have given me everything.”
Pique has won the World Cup and European Championships with Spain as well as the UEFA Champions League three times and La Liga eight times with Barcelona in the past.
However, O’Hara and Pennant don’t believe Pique’s achievements are enough to label him as one of the best defenders of all time.
Speaking about Pique, Pennant, a former Arsenal midfielder, told TalkSport: “As a player, I’m not pointing to Gerard Pique as one of the greats.”
On his part, O’Hara added, “It helps if you have Messi, Puyol, Iniesta and Xavi… he was probably the worst player in that Barca side!”
