A disgraced senior police officer who was recently demoted after he pleaded guilty to impaired driving won’t be taking on a role as acting superintendent.
Riyaz Hussein, who used to head up Toronto Police’s disciplinary unit, was recently demoted to inspector from superintendent.
He was poised to take on the role of acting superintendent, according to the Toronto Police Association, but the assignment has since been revoked.
“(Friday) Chief Demkiw directed that a pending acting assignment be revoked and that Riyaz Hussein is to remain doing his duties as an Inspector for the duration of the penalty,” spokesperson Allison Sparkes said in a statement.
“There never was an added financial benefit in this acting assignment and no benefit was received by the officer,” she added.
In a letter dated July 20, TPA Vice President Brian Callanan wrote that Hussein should be held to a higher standard than other officers given his rank.

“It is our expectation that the disciplinary process be applied fairly in every case,” Callanan wrote. “The service has taken the position that the higher the rank, the higher the standard one should be held to. We could not agree more.”
Hussein pleaded guilty to impaired driving in a case that involved him crashing into another vehicle on Hwy. 401 in Pickering on Jan. 13, 2022.
He also appeared before a police tribunal and pleaded guilty to one count of discreditable conduct. The demotion was to last 12 months.
