The Ogun State Police Command said it shot dead a suspected highway robber in the early hours of Sunday.
It added that other members of his gang escaped with bullet injuries.
It was gathered that the suspect was shot dead at Ososa junction, along the Shagamu-Ore Expressway, while his gang was robbing some travellers.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the operatives of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad received a distress call at 2.30am that robbers had blocked the expressway and were dispossessing people of their valuables.
Oyeyemi said, “The officer in charge of the FSARS, Uba Adam, immediately led his men to the scene and engaged the robbers in a gun duel for about 45 minutes.
“At the end of the encounter, one of the robbers was shot dead, while others escaped with gunshot injuries.”
Oyeyemi, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, said two locally-made single-barrelled guns and 78 live cartridges were recovered from the scene.
He said the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, had appealed to members of the public, especially hospitals, to alert the police if they saw anybody with gunshot injuries in their areas.
