The Nigerian Army on Friday said that it had arrested a suspected arms supplier, Peter Iorlaha, in the Mararaba area of Nasarawa State.Our correspondent learnt that Iorlaha was nabbed by troops attached to the Guards Brigade at a checkpoint in the area during a stop-and-search operation.It was gathered that the troops recovered a bag from the suspect containing two locally-made pistols, one locally-made short gun, two rounds of 7.62mm (special), and five live cartridges, among others.The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig. Gen. Sani Usman, who confirmed the arrest, said that an investigation was ongoing.He said, “The troops were deployed at Mararaba, Nasarawa State, for an internal security operation and thereafter nabbed the man at the checkpoint on Thursday.“The suspect was apprehended with a bag containing two locally-made pistols; one locally-made short gun, two rounds of 7.62mm (Special), five live cartridges, two torches, a screwdriver, charms and a mobile phone.“During a preliminary investigation, the suspect revealed that the weapons and other items were handed over to him by his uncle for safe keeping. The suspect is currently under interrogation.”Meanwhile, the Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj. Gen. Rogers Nicholas, has met with heads of security agencies and Non-Governmental Organisations in Maiduguri, Borno State, to deliberate on issues bordering on security and humanitarian activities.Nicholas disclosed that some unregistered NGOs had found their ways into the theatre and were operating without proper documentation with the appropriate government supervisory agencies.He noted that the activities of such organisations contributed to insecurity in the metropolis.
