There is tension and an atmosphere of uncertainty surrounding the Igbo community residing in Kano over the three months ultimatum issued to the group to exit the northern part of the country by a coalition of Arewa Youths as announced on Tuesday in Kaduna at the popular Arewa House.
Despite assurances by the Federal Government and other stakeholders, the Igbos are not taking the threat lightly as observation on Thursday showed that some men have begun to send their wives and children home as proactive measures against what some mischievous elements in the society could be possibly planning against them.
The Eze Ndigbo Kano, Igwe Boniface Ibekwe, has however asked the Igbo community in Kano to ignore the threat and regard it as an empty one as Northern leaders are not in its support.
He said: “I believe and based on my understanding, as a major stakeholder in the North, the Northern leaders are never in support of the threat, so they should ignore it and go about their day to day businesses and activities.”
According to him, preparations are being made by Ndigbo in Kano to summon a meeting of stakeholders to establish their grievances, noting that he has since established contact with the Northern leaders in respect of the matter.
He advised that whatever their grievances are, they should channel them to the appropriate authorities who would definitely look into them, and not resorting to taking laws into their hands.
