US President Donald Trump has sparked outrage in France after mocking French President Emmanuel Macron and making remarks about his wife, Brigitte Macron.
Trump made the comments during a private lunch while criticising NATO allies for not supporting the war against Iran. He reportedly imitated a French accent and claimed that Macron’s wife “treats him extremely badly,” referencing a past viral video which Macron had dismissed as a joke and part of a disinformation campaign.
The remarks triggered strong reactions across France, including from political figures who are usually critical of Macron.
Yaël Braun-Pivet described Trump’s behaviour as inappropriate, stressing that global leaders should focus on serious international issues rather than mocking one another.
Similarly, Manuel Bompard condemned the comments, calling them unacceptable despite his political disagreements with Macron.
French media also criticised Trump’s statements, with conservative newspaper Le Figaro describing the incident as another controversial outburst.
In his remarks, Trump also questioned the reliability of NATO, referring to the alliance as a “paper tiger” and suggesting it might not be dependable in a major conflict.
His comments come amid ongoing tensions involving Iran, with US officials indicating that Washington may reassess its relationship with NATO after the conflict.
The incident has added strain to transatlantic relations, highlighting growing disagreements between the United States and its European allies.
