Border crossings across the U.S., including those in Windsor-Detroit, will temporarily close Friday morning for ceremonies honouring victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection will temporarily halt traffic at five Michigan border crossings, including the Ambassador Bridge, Gordie Howe International Bridge and the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel.
“Motorists should plan accordingly and allow extra time if crossing the border Friday morning,” CBP said in a media advisory.
Friday marks the 25th anniversary of the worst terrorist attack ever on U.S. soil. Islamic terrorists hijacked commercial flights in the United States and flew them into the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. Nearly 3,000 people were killed.
CBP said it will clear traffic from border crossings at 8:46 a.m., the time the first hijacked airplane hit the World Trade Center. Taps, the military bugle call, will be played during a flag-raising ceremony, followed by a moment of silence at all ports of entry.
The U.S. agency said the closure will last 30 minutes or less.
The International Bridge in Sault Ste. Marie and the Blue Water Bridge in Sarnia will also close temporarily.
Tal Czudner, CEO of the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel, said traffic at that crossing will actually halt for about 15 minutes starting at 8:40 a.m.
