Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has claimed that Iran attempted to assassinate one of his two sons, although he did not provide further details about the alleged incident.
“Something incredible happened: Iran targeted one of my sons. Iran tried to kill one of my sons,” Netanyahu said during a phone interview with Israel’s Channel 14.
Netanyahu made the claim while discussing reports that Israel’s domestic security agency, Shin Bet, had declined to provide round-the-clock security for former army chief Gadi Eisenkot, who is reportedly in a close race with Netanyahu ahead of the October 27 elections.
Netanyahu expressed support for continuous protection for Eisenkot, arguing that such security was necessary.
“Without that, (the Iranians) will succeed,” he said.
Netanyahu has two sons and a daughter, but he did not identify which of his sons was allegedly targeted.
His elder son, Yair Netanyahu, 35, has spent extended periods in Miami since early 2024, reportedly under Shin Bet protection.
Yair’s stay in the United States has generated controversy in Israel over the cost of his security arrangements to taxpayers. Some residents in South Florida have also raised concerns that his presence could potentially make the area a target for attacks by Israel’s adversaries.
Following Netanyahu’s remarks, prominent Israeli journalist Amit Segal said on his Telegram channel that the alleged assassination attempt had reportedly been known for months but was subject to a gag order.
Netanyahu did not provide further information about the alleged Iranian attempt or specify when or where it occurred.
